My Experience as a Tradia Franchisee

At the request of some people that I care about deeply, I have decided to share a factual account of my experience as a Tradia franchisee. The intention of this post? To warn those that would do business with them. In doing so, I don’t wish to face a libel lawsuit. They already sued me once, and that was enough. I will make the most sincere attempt to corral my commentary to facts. The facts are:

  • I started with Tradia, then Compasscard, in April of 2003 as a regional trade director on an independent contractor agreement.
  • Compasscard/Tradia had acquired a trade exchange I used to work for, UBX.
  • Compasscard grandfathered my clients to my brokerage.
  • For the rest of that year and the next, I operated my brokerage with relative freedom and prosperity.
  • I served on the board of directors for the corporation starting in 2004.
  • Tradia changed names in 2005 from Compasscard to Tradia.
  • Matthew Humphreys let Manena Seamons go, one of the ethical employees and a dear friend of mine, because it was suspected by his wife that he was having an affair with Manena. This was discussed openly in my visit to Portland for the board meeting where Manena’s departure was announced.
  • Manena was replaced by Matthew Humphrey’s wife, Paula, who took over operations of the company.
  • Paula quickly began instituting tight controls on everything, including inventory accounts, gift certificates, posting of transactions, admission of new members, travel restrictions and other day to day operations.
  • The new rules more than doubled my work and the time it took to do business.
  • During the summer of 2006 I was assigned by a client to pre-sell $20k in chocolates. Paula stopped letting my member’s purchases get posted to their accounts because her chocolates weren’t delivered when she wanted them. It cost me hundreds of dollars in fees. This is only one example.
  • I was asked to take down my Tradia of Utah.com website, under the guise of brand consolidation, offering no alternative form of communication with my clients in its place.
  • After winning several awards over several years (broker of the year 3 times, most cash collected, most new members, etc.) in the fall of 2006 I began to tire of fighting tooth and nail with Paula over posting transactions.
  • At the January board meeting in Salt Lake City, both Matthew and Paula Humphreys spent the first three hours grilling me about my “loyalty” to the company. This after having served on the board for years, donating all of my system improvements and ideas with no compensation, and serving as the broker board president for two years for free.
  • The board meeting, which lasted two days, generated no clear objective and no direction for the company.
  • In February I started planning on leaving the company to start an exchange with its base of operations in St George.
  • In May, I left my Tradia franchises to my partner, taking only $60k in business debt with me, to start fresh in another city.
  • The 19th of that month I lost my father to suicide.
  • Not having the heart to pursue my new venture, I left it in the hands of my only employee and started doing web design full time.
  • February 2008, Tradia served me with a summons to Oregon State Court for the purpose of obtaining damages because of the business I had abandoned. They had sustained no damages as my partner was still operating the business at optimum levels.
  • July 2008, the lawsuit is still open in Oregon State Court.

To anyone that is thinking about doing business with Tradia, I would reconsider, and investigate more fully the company you are interested in getting in bed with. These documents are from the Oregon State Court. They summarize the five lawsuits that Tradia has pending in that court against former employees and franchisees.

Thinking about joining Tradia, drop me a line, I will tell you what it is like as a (former) member. RUN RUN RUN

  2. Teresa August 24, 2010 at 8:47 pm #

I was just approached by a former barter company that I was a member of and now they are working with Tradia and my first response was heck no because of an experience we had several years ago. Just interested in what you have to say

  3. complete rip off August 30, 2010 at 2:48 pm #

A tradia salesman riped my company off of 1000 dollars signing me up into their tradia network. He used my services and then left tradia with out paying me in tradia dollars or real money. I tried to use the tradia dollars with other vendors/members but noone would trade or even to come out to trade. Tradia network is scam, good luck if you use them. if you don’t use them, don’t start.

  4. secchione9 September 14, 2010 at 8:44 am #

Frankly, I’m surprised anyone would be stupid enough to start doing business with them, except for one thing: Matthew Humphreys. He talks a good game, he has a decent look for an older guy, and is smooth like snake oil. Of course they don’t actually disclose any real details about their business, and most of the figures in the franchise disclosure are made up. The worst part about that is that the company you used to do business is going to get screwed, one way or another. They are either going to lose money, get sued, both, or worse be stuck working for them for the next decade.

  5. Ted May 24, 2011 at 3:35 pm #

Tradia was just bought out by a good company
Itex, so lets hope they straighten things up

  6. Joshua August 30, 2011 at 4:54 pm #

Why anybody would want to be a part of or do business with any of these trade exchanges befuddles me. I have worked in the industry and been a client and can attest to the borderline criminal activity that goes along with trade exchanges. Whether it is Tradia, ITEX, Florida Barter, BizXchange, IMS, or any of the others, the goal is to make money by exploiting members period. They use up the resources of one member to make other members happy and then have to do it over and over to sustain themselves. If you really want an edge in sales and marketing, do what you say you are going to do, provide good service to your customers, and pay your bills. Simple as that.

  7. secchione9 August 30, 2011 at 4:58 pm #

Agreed, except that there are some good exchanges. IMS and BizX have a good reputation and make great attempts to be ethical and have a valuable currency. I’m actually a big fan of the barter industry, and would recommend it to anyone. Except that your experience will always depend on your broker. If you have a good broker, you’ll generally have a good experience. If not, you simply won’t.
