We’re in Arches National Park right now, and I am enjoying a moment where everyone is asleep but Lucy and I, and she was asleep until a minute ago. I should be working on a site while I have a minute, but I’m not going to. Instead, I am going to dish on some fun we’ve had.
Ok, so we picked the most awesome weekend to come down here that I think we could have picked. There is a huge classic car show going on all weekend. Friday when we checked in, we headed back in to town from the RV Park, parked the RV (heheh) and then wandered Main St Moab for a while. I haven’t taken time to people watch in what feels like years, if it really hasn’t been years. I think it has though…anyway, I really had a lot of fun sitting on the side of the road watching cool cars drive by and watching people walk by. I used to do that a lot. For some reason, i stopped cold some years ago. I’m going to take a look at that.
Anyway, tons of ‘stangs, Malibus, Cameros, etc. Awesome. Beautiful cars. A couple of rice burners. Two or three model As.
Then back to the park for dinner and some rest. Except the rest part.
Madi has had some kind of stomach thing going on (probably too much sugar loaded food on the way down yesterday) and was barfing all night and even this morning. At 10:30 pm I was awakened to the sound of Madi’s grunting and then I willingly took the assignment to go to the laundry facility and wash the blankets and whatnot. I took Stranger Than Fiction with me. I’ve been trying to watch it for two weeks. What a great show! Great use of comedy, great use of special effects, Will Farrell is very sympathetic. Great film! Great end. Anyway, I went back when the laundry was done at about 1 am.
We get up today and decide it is a good idea to go get some soda to soothe her belly or whatever. Both Becca and I have memories of drinking soda when we were throwing up as kids. I go to the machine, which is probably 30 feet from the RV, and try some quarters. Nothing. The machine shoots them back out to me. I go around the corner, trying to find another machine.
Nothing.
I say to myself, “Let’s take another look.” I thought maybe the problem was one of intimacy. There is a philosophical tenet that I am going to call the law of intimacy that says that the solutions to problems aren’t mysterious, but that when you get intimate with the problems, solutions present themselves in droves. So, I go back to the first machine and looking at it I notice that the coin return button is pushed in. I pull it out. Two coins drop in to the change return bin. “Sweet! Free soda!” I say to myself. Putting the coins back in, I choose Sprite. After what seems like a week of whirring and bobbing noises, out pops a bottle. Sprite, right? No. Coke. Disappointment and bewilderment ensue. I was sure I pushed the Sprite button.
I tried again, this time choosing Barqs Root Beer. Whirring, bobbing, and finally, blop! Out comes my next bottle. Barq’s, right? Nope. Powerade Blue. At this point it’s getting comical. I laugh and think, “Well, the circus must go on.” I drop another two quarters in, this time choosing Fanta Orange. Finally, after the whirring and bobbing and the final blop, out pops a bottle of Fanta.
Only one problem: we wanted Sprite.
I decide to take my booty back and try some anyway. None work. Effort lost. End of story. Becca remembered later that soda makes Madi’s belly hurt even when she’s healthy.
We are toughing it out anyway, and Madi has been a trooper.
Lucy was starting to get noisy so I took her for a nature walk. We’re at the Delicate Arch Lookout and we went up the hill and to the canyon. Whoa! That canyon is better than the arch. Amazing. Why don’t we come down here more often? I don’t have a great answer.
We should have some fun pictures of the trip to share here in a little while too.
Right now we’re waiting for the kids to wake up so we can see some more of the park. More later.
Day two of the car show was even better. Tons of beautiful cars cruising the main drag, hundreds of people just hanging around watching. Awesome. But we were pooped and cold and wanted to sleep, so back to the RV park we went and sleep we did. Today, church, and then something less adventurous. We’ll see.
